MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — A revised Shelby County Schools $950 million budget includes the closing of nine schools before the fall.
Media outlets report that Superintendent Dorsey Hopson presented the budget revisions to the school board Tuesday evening. The tentative budget for next year is almost $40 million less than this year's budget. It also assumes the Shelby County Commission would chip in nearly $40 million.
Among the revisions is a recommendation to close nine of the district's schools, six of which are charters, in order to help close a budget gap and avoid cuts to programs that keep students in the district.
Dorset says academic performance is the "driving factor" for the decision to close the schools.
A public hearing on the budget is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Thursday at the Memphis Teacher Learning Academy.
