BURLINGTON, Vermont (AP) — Vermont health officials say they have confirmed the state's first case of Zika virus.

Officials said Friday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed that the adult resident traveled to a Zika-affected area before developing symptoms.

Authorities did not identify the resident or where he or she lives or traveled.

Patsy Kelso, a state epidemiologist, says mosquitoes in Vermont are not likely to transmit the virus.

She said officials have expected to see travel-related cases of Zika and expect to see more.

Virus symptoms may include fever, rash, joint pain, and pink eye.

Zika virus has caused microcephaly, a serious birth defect of the brain, in babies of mothers who had the virus while pregnant. Officials say women who are pregnant should avoid Zika-affected areas.
