SEATTLE (AP) — A psychiatric hospital where two men escaped Wednesday night already was facing federal scrutiny for safety problems. Patient Mark Alexander Adams was captured Thursday morning, but authorities are still looking for 28-year-old Anthony Garver, who was accused of torturing a woman to death but was found too mentally ill for trial. Authorities say the men crawled out of a window in a locked, lower-security unit of a Washington state psychiatric hospital south of Tacoma.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Prosecutors in Los Angeles are blaming four former social workers for the abuse of an 8-year-old boy who died a gruesome death in 2013. The four, who include two supervisors, have been charged with child abuse. And two of them also are accused of falsifying public records. They appeared in court Thursday for arraignment. Prosecuting welfare workers for physical abuse caused by another is rare.
NEW YORK (AP) — At first it seemed like they weren't going to bash each other, but things have changed. Democrats Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have been exchanging a series of barbs over their qualifications for the presidency. Sanders told union members at an AFL-CIO conference in Philadelphia Thursday, "I will not leave here this morning and go to a Wall Street fundraiser." The comment was a direct dig at Clinton, who was headed to Ohio and Colorado for fundraising after a campaign stop in New York City.
TOKYO (AP) — Next week, Secretary of State John Kerry will become the highest-ranking U.S. government official to visit Hiroshima, Japan, where 140,000 people died from the first of two atomic bombs dropped by the U.S. more than 70 years ago. Kerry and the other Group of Seven foreign ministers are scheduled to visit the Hiroshima Peace Park on Monday and lay flowers to honor the dead. Foreign ministers are holding a two-day meeting on terrorism, maritime security and nuclear non-proliferation.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — "American Idol" is over. The influential TV show crowned its 15th and final winner Thursday night — Trent Harmon, who defeated La'Porsha Renae for the crown. The first "American Idol" finale was in 2002, and it was a battle of the sexes, with Kelly Clarkson the victor over Justin Guarini. Besides Clarkson, several other "Idol" contestants have become superstars, including Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Fantasia, Ruben Studdard and Jordin Sparks.
