SPRINGVILLE — A Springville man tried to kill a police officer by running him down in a car while fleeing arrest last month, charges filed Friday allege.
Police are still trying to find Corbin Chandler Decker, 19, who is charged in 3rd District Court with attempted aggravated murder, a first-degree felony.
Decker is also charged with failure to respond to an officer's signal to stop, resulting in injury or death, theft by receiving stolen property and obstructing, all second-degree felonies; aggravated assault and failure to stop at a serious injury accident, both third-degree felonies; and failure to stop at an injury accident, a class A misdemeanor.
Decker is suspected of using methamphetamine with 20-year-old Christopher L. Damron inside a car parked on a long driveway in Springville March 26. A Springville police officer tried to get the two men to exit the vehicle, but Decker allegedly locked the car door and began to drive forward with the officer still in front of the car. The officer was pushed for about 30 feet before escaping the path of the car, suffering a sprained ankle and a wrist injury, according to court documents.
Decker continued driving and was traveling about 25 miles-per-hour when he struck a second officer farther down the driveway, his charges state. The officer was flipped 15 feet into the air from the impact and landed 18 feet away from where he was originally standing, court documents state.
The impact sent the officer into the windshield, breaking his nose and causing facial lacerations. He was later hospitalized.
Charges state Decker drove toward the officer "intentionally to hit him," just moments after telling Damron he didn't want to go back to jail, his charges say.
Police said they eventually found the car, suspected of being stolen, in another Springville neighborhood. His whereabouts were unknown as of Friday.
Damron was found and arrested after allegedly running into the basement of a stranger's home. He was charged Friday with theft by receiving stolen property, a second-degree felony; obstructing justice and possession or use of a controlled substance, both third-degree felonies; and use or possession of drug paraphernalia, a class B misdemeanor.
Damron, also from Springville, told police that Decker intentionally struck the second officer, court documents state.
