Most gardeners, including me, get numerous advertisements for various products. As a disclaimer, let me emphasize that these kinds of products are not sold through reputable local nursuries, nor are they sold by most quality mail order firms.
Whenever you by horticultural products, consider the reputaion and the guarantee of the company that sells them. Do they have people who can help you with information in growing the plants and with problems should they arise? Are they in business for the long term or are they temporary sites that will bo long gone as the season progresses and if your plant develops a problem?
The most frequently advertised product I will put in the unbargin class is zoysia grass. The advertisement claims it never needs water, never needs fertilizer, never needs mowing and crowds out all weeds. It never needs replacement.
Why wouldn't everyone want this grass in his or her own landscape? You would if you lived in St. George, Arizona or the rest of the South. It is a warm season grass and Northern Utah is in the cool season grass zone.
When your cool season grass lawn looks the best, warm season grasses are dormant. It resembles a cocoa fiber doormat in the spring and fall. Since it does not produce seed, it must be established with plugs. this method sometimes takes several years for the turf to fill and cover the soil.
Leave the Zoysia grass for other areas, not for Northern Utah.
