NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Jets have released tight end Jeff Cumberland, saving themselves $1.9 million in salary cap space.
The move Wednesday comes as the Jets try to add spending flexibility with free agency set to start. New York had just approximately $6.7 million in cap space before the move.
After catching 23 or more passes in each of the previous three seasons, Cumberland was used sparingly in Chan Gailey's offense last year as the Jets often turned to second-year wide receiver Quincy Enunwa in a tight end-like role. Cumberland finished with five catches for 77 yards in 15 games.
The 28-year-old Cumberland, signed by the Jets as an undrafted free agent out of Illinois in 2010, has 86 career receptions for 1,119 yards and 10 touchdowns.
