CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) -- Southern Utah is adding a women's golf team, which will begin playing next fall.
University trustees approved adding the sport during a meeting Wednesday. The school will have 16 NCAA Division I teams, including nine for women.
"Any time you can add a sport you bolster the strength of the department," athletic director Ken Beazer said in a release Thursday. "This is part of a plan that was put into place five years ago and I'm fortunate enough to be here when it came through."
Beazer hopes to hire a coach within the next month.
The Thunderbirds already have varsity women's teams in gymnastics, cross country, indoor and outdoor track, basketball, soccer, softball and tennis.
Men's sports are football, cross country, indoor and outdoor track, basketball, baseball and golf.
