ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP) — Chip Hooper, the father of Oakland University guard Max Hooper, has died. He was 53.
The school said Hooper died Saturday of cancer. He received national attention when he was able to attend his son's final regular-season game on Feb. 26 on an emotional night at the suburban Detroit school.
"This is a very sad day for the Oakland basketball family," coach Greg Kampe said in a statement Sunday. "Max is traveling to California to spend a day with his family. We ask that you offer your prayers to his family. Please wait to reach out to him."
The Golden Grizzlies play in the Horizon League Tournament semifinals Monday night in Detroit.
Max Hooper said Friday the regular-season finale was an "indescribable moment" and something he and his family won't forget any time soon.
"My basketball journey started with me and my dad," he said then. "He's been there every step of the way. My time at Oakland, he hasn't been able to come to any games other than that one, due to health issues. I can't even put into words how much that moment meant to me."
