Free well water tests offered in Caldwell area

CALDWELL, Idaho (AP) — In honor of National Ground Water Awareness Week, residents of the Caldwell area are being offered free well water tests on Tuesday.

Southwest District Health is providing free nitrate tests in its Caldwell office and in multiple rural locations.

The Idaho Press-Tribune reports (http://is.gd/bEw6Ci ) water samples should be brought in a wide-mouth canning jar or another food-grade container.

In Idaho, well water systems are the source of drinking water for almost 95 percent of residents.

Water from private wells is not tested or regulated by any government agency. So private well owners are responsible for getting their water tested for bacteria, nitrates and other contaminants.

Southwest Idaho has experienced elevated levels of arsenic, fluoride and uranium in many areas.
