CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) -- A Florida woman says that before he tried to choke her husband and was killed by a shotgun blast, Steven Stubbs forced his way into their motor home and said he wanted to go south.
Stubbs, 26, was shot to death at about 9:45 p.m. Tuesday after he allegedly entered the motor home and refused to leave, police Lt. David Holm said.
Officers continued their investigation Thursday into whether the shooting was justified.
Carl Coltellino, his wife, Tracy, and their two daughters were on vacation from Cape Coral, Fla., and planning to visit Grand Canyon National Park.
Now they just want to go home, Tracy Coltellino told The Spectrum.
She said they often park in a Wal-Mart parking lot while traveling and that was what they were doing while in Cedar City.
She said Stubbs came to the door.
"We thought he was security, so that's why we opened the door," Tracy Coltellino said Thursday. She said they had never met him before.
She said Stubbs told them that "he wanted to go south," and she believed that he may have approached their motor home after seeing the Florida license plates.
She said they tried to get him to leave.
"We tried shoving. We tried screaming," but Stubbs braced himself in the doorway and wouldn't leave, she said.
She said he began choking her husband.
"My babies, my children, were two feet away from him," Tracy Coltellino said.
Police said the Florida man shot Stubbs.
Stubbs, who graduated from high school and college in Cedar City, most recently attended Barry University of Law in Orlando, Fla., relatives said.
