SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Utah gymnast Breanna Hughes was named the Pac-12 Specialist of the Week for the second time this season after winning three events in Utah's 197.025-196.750 road win over then-No. 14 California.
The senior won the first three events of the day, scoring a 9.90 on bars, a career-tying 9.90 on vault and a 9.925 on floor. Nationally, she currently ranks No. 13 on vault (9.885 Regional Qualifying Score average) and floor (9.910) and No. 17 on bars (9.880)
"(She) has blossomed. Her confidence has continued to grow," said Utah co-head coach Tom Farden.
"I see a spark for gymnastics in her senior year. She's hitting on all cylinders in all events."
Hughes leads the sixth-ranked team in overall victories (13) and is the first triple winner for the team.
Utah has won six Pac-12 weekly awards this season, including Pac-12 Specialist of the week honors featuring Hughes (Jan. 19, March 1) and Baely Rowe (Jan. 26). Freshman Sabrina Schwab is a three-time Freshman of the Week award winner (Jan. 12, Feb. 16).
Hughes is projected to compete in the all-around competition when she and the Utes take on No. 5 Michigan Friday, March 4 in their last road meet of a three-week road trip.
