SANTAQUIN, Utah County — Five people were arrested after a pursuit that started on I-15 Monday.
A trooper from the Utah Highway Patrol first attempted to stop a red Ford Mustang that was traveling 101 mph on I-15 in Juab County at about 10:05 p.m., according to UHP. Investigators said after the Mustang's front right tire blew, the driver took Exit 242 to head into Santaquin but lost control at the bottom of the off-ramp.
The driver of the Mustang then crashed into the front of a patrol car as the UHP trooper attempted to box them in, according to UHP. Officers from multiple law enforcement agencies set up a containment area after the driver and four passengers abandoned the Mustang in the Summit Ridge subdivision, which only has one entrance.
"With help from residents who gave descriptions and (provided) the direction the suspects ran, a containment area was established," a statement from UHP reads. "A search of the area was completed and five suspects were apprehended hiding in window wells of a vacant home in the area."
Investigators arrested 27-year-old Maurilio Tejada, 30-year-old Male Michael Haveron, 28-year-old Margarita Perez, 26-year-old Jesus Valdez and 27-year-old Eduardo Grigalva were booked into the Juab County Jail and could face several charges, according to UHP.
Investigators said they found methamphetamine inside the vehicle and on I-15. During the beginning of the pursuit, a UHP trooper said they saw one of the vehicle's occupants toss items out of the window that they believed were drugs.
