DETROIT (AP) — A new high school that includes a bilingual education program in Spanish and English has opened in Detroit.
The Detroit Public Schools district says Academy of the Americas expanded to a high school site and students in grades 8 to 10 last month started attending classes in the Escuela Preparatoria Academia de las Américas. The school will later expand to grades 11 and 12.
An open house is Monday.
Principal Nicholas Brown says in a statement the school offers an "opportunity to prepare students for a global, multilingual, multicultural workplace and society."
The Academy of the Americas' lower academy, also located in southwest Detroit, has pre-kindergarten through seventh grade. Students take most of their classes beginning in Spanish in the earliest grades and phase in more English in later grades.
