Shelley Osterloh ReportingA two alarm fire has scorched an apartment building in Cottonwood Heights, injuring at least three people and putting a lot of people out of their homes.
The fire is burning at the Shadow Ridge Apartments, located at 7180 South and 1300 East.
Firefighters got the call at about 3:45 this afternoon and the building was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived on the scene. Witnesses say it went up in flames in a matter of seconds.
Three people were injured, one fairly critical. A woman was forced to jump from the third floor to escape the fire. She suffered some smoke inhalation and had serious injuries from her fall.
Andrea Richter, Resident: "She was holding onto the window and yelling 'help' and then she kind of jumped, and kind of fell. And there was a girl that kind of caught her. It was just freaky."
Richard Duggar, Property Manager: "My employees went to find a ladder to get her out. We couldn't find a ladder tall enough before she jumped."
There were two other people that also jumped out of the building, all from the third floor. We heard frantic radio calls from firefighters going room to room, clearing the apartment.
There are 24 units in the building. The center section is completely burned out. It is a large complex with about 10 buildings total. The fire stayed in the one building.
