GRANTSVILLE, Tooele County — A 23-year-old man was seriously injured after he was ejected during a rollover accident on I-80 Tuesday morning.
The Utah County man was driving westbound on I-80 near Grantsville when witnesses said they saw his white Dodge pickup truck begin drifting on the road, according to Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Randy Riches. The vehicle drifted off the right side of the roadway, and a short time later, the driver lost control and the vehicle spun out and ran into the median on the left side of the highway, causing it to roll, Riches said.
The 23-year-old driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident and was thrown from the vehicle while it was rolling, Riches said. He was located lying in the median several feet from the truck and was transported by medical helicopter to a Salt Lake area hospital in serious condition.
Riches said snow was blowing across I-80 causing very slick conditions. Officials believe the driver may have been traveling too fast for the conditions and that fatigue may have been a factor.
Eastbound I-80 was closed for about 30 minutes during the morning commute while the medical helicopter landed.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
