LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Lafayette police say an infant is in good health after a man used the state's safe haven law to drop the child off at a hospital in the Indiana city.
Police say the man brought the baby to IU Health Arnett Hospital early Tuesday and left.
Lt. Brian Gossard says the infant was in good health, had no signs of neglect and is now in the care of Child Protective Services.
Gossard tells the (Lafayette) Journal & Courier (http://on.jconline.com/1nmZJYi ) that he can't recall any previous case where someone in Lafayette used Indiana's safe haven law to drop off an unwanted infant.
That law was adopted in 2000 and allows an adult to anonymously drop off an unwanted child less than 45-days old at a hospital, fire station or police station.
