Valenti, Canisius escape Manhattan with 65-62 win

NEW YORK (AP) — Phil Valenti made the go-ahead free throws for Canisius with 14.4 seconds left and blocked Zane Waterman in the final seconds to clinch a 65-62 win over Manhattan on Friday night.

Valenti finished with a career-high 28 points on 10-of-14 shooting. His pair of free throws gave the Golden Griffins (8-10, 3-4 Metro Atlantic) a 63-62 lead.

Manhattan called timeout with 11.7 seconds to set up a final shot. After Waterman was blocked, the Jaspers sent Malcolm McMillan to the foul line where he capped the scoring with 0.3 seconds.

McMillan added 17 points for Canisius, which led 57-51 with 4:40 to go.

Manhattan (6-10, 3-4) rallied to lead 60-59 on Rich Williams' 3-pointer with 1:28 left and went back in front at 62-61 on Waterman's free throws with 49 seconds left.

Shane Richards led the Jaspers with 14 points and Waterman scored 13.
