DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — One-point-five billion -- and climbing. That's the latest number from lottery officials, who are watching the jackpot for tomorrow night's Powerball drawing climb even further into record territory. And the jackpot could grow even more if ticket sales continue to top expectations. If there's one winner, the current jackpot would mean a lump-sum payment of $930 million, before taxes.
WASHINGTON (AP) — There are often some high-profile guests -- and sometimes some controversial ones -- in the House chamber for the State of the Union speech. And tonight is no exception. Democrats have invited two members of a Muslim civic group, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, to attend. And that doesn't sit well with Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson, who tells CNN that the group has "done things that are clearly not pro-American." Also attending, at the invitation of a member of Congress, will be Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk who went to jail after refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses.
ISTANBUL (AP) — A Turkish official says at least nine of the 10 people who died in today's suicide bombing in Istanbul's historic district were German nationals. Turkish authorities say the attack was carried out by a Syrian man in an area of Istanbul popular with tourists. Turkey's prime minister says the Islamic State group is responsible.
FLORENCE, Italy (AP) — An Italian prosecutor says an autopsy has determined that an American woman, whose naked body was found last week in her Florence apartment, was strangled with an object such as a rope. The prosecutor says more time is needed to establish the time of death for Ashley Olsen, a 35-year-old U.S. citizen who had lived in Florence for about three years. Olsen's body, with bruises and scratches on her neck, was discovered Saturday after her Italian boyfriend asked the landlady to open the apartment.
CINCINNATI (AP) — Police in Cincinnati say a man has fatally shot his 14-year-old son in their home, thinking he was an intruder. Police say the man thought his son had caught the bus for school this morning, but the teen returned home soon afterward. The man heard a noise in the basement and checked on it with a gun in his hand. Police say the father fired after apparently being startled, hitting the boy in the neck. The father called 911 and the boy was taken to a hospital, where he died. The father is being interviewed by police, who say he's been cooperative.
