MEXICO CITY (AP) — It's another indication that U.S. authorities won't be getting their hands on "El Chapo" anytime soon. A Mexican official says it will probably take at least a year to extradite Joaquin Guzman to the United States. The drug kingpin was recaptured Friday, six months after breaking out of a Mexican prison. Mexican authorities were apparently tracking actor Sean Penn as he visited the country in October to meet with Guzman. But Penn says today he has no regrets about that visit.
BALTIMORE (AP) — Jury selection was supposed to start today in Baltimore in the trial of the police officer who was driving the van carrying Freddie Gray on the day he was injured last year. But the trial is on hold, as an appeals court considers whether another officer who is facing charges in the case should be forced to testify against the driver. Gray died in April, a week after his neck was broken during a van ride.
ATLANTA (AP) — The suspect in a series of jewelry store robberies across the South has made her first court appearance in the case, and wept as she was led from the courtroom. A criminal complaint accuses 24-year-old Abigail Kemp of conspiring with others to rob stores in Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee. The FBI says she was apprehended in the Atlanta suburb of Smyrna, Georgia, along with a person who was with her at the time. Authorities haven't identified that person.
WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Hillary Clinton is escalating her attacks on Democratic primary rival Bernie Sanders, criticizing his opposition to a 2005 gun control bill and saying his health care plan will raise costs for American taxpayers and families. Her attacks come as polls show the race for the Democratic nomination tightening in Iowa. Voters in the state will be the first to make their choices in the nominating race, on February 1st.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Prosecutors in Nevada say they won't charge Lamar Odom after the former NBA star was found unconscious at a brothel with cocaine in his system. The district attorney in Nye County says the evidence didn't prove that Odom used the drug during his three days in the county, so he could not be charged there. The Odom family said he left a Los Angeles hospital last week for a private facility.
