NEW YORK (AP) — Kanye West calls David Bowie "one of my most important inspirations, so fearless, so creative." Bowie, the innovative and iconic singer whose illustrious career lasted five decades, has died of cancer. He had just turned 69 and released a new album. The man who had a knack for reinventing himself had kept a low profile in recent years.

WASHINGTON (AP) — An important public employee union case goes before the Supreme Court today for oral arguments. At issue is a challenge to the right of public sector unions to collect fees from teachers, firefighters and other state and local government workers who choose not to become actual members. The challenge is brought by a group of California teachers.

BOSTON (AP) — A court appearance is scheduled today in Boston for a man charged in the killing a 2-year-old Massachusetts girl whose body was found on a Boston Harbor island. Michael McCarthy is accused of killing his girlfriend's daughter, Bella Bond. Her mother, Rachelle Bond, is accused of helping McCarthy conceal her daughter's body. McCarthy's lawyer has said that McCarthy knows nothing about the death.

ISLAMABAD (AP) — Is there a roadmap to peace in Afghanistan? A key gathering involving the United States, China, Afghanistan and Pakistan today aims to find out. The meeting in Islamabad comes as battlefield losses in Afghanistan are mounting and entire swaths of the country that cost hundreds of U.S.-led coalition and Afghan military lives to secure slip back into Taliban hands. The Taliban isn't attending.

BEIJING (AP) — The force expanded into relatively uncharted territory over the weekend and held its own. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" earned $52 million during its opening weekend in China, a strong start but pulling in much less than "Fast & Furious 7" did on its first weekend in the world's second-largest movie market. Chinese movie-goers aren't as familiar with the franchise as the West.
