DETROIT (AP) — Alec Peters had career highs of 39 points and 14 rebounds and Valparaiso beat Detroit 92-74 on Sunday in a battle for first place in the Horizon League.
Peters was 12-of-20 shooting and made all nine of his free throws in tying the Crusaders' Division I single-game scoring record. He also posted his fourth double-double in the last five games.
Tevonn Walker added 21 points for the Crusaders (13-3, 3-0), who won their third consecutive game and ended the Titans' three-game winning streak and their run of 12 straight home victories.
Anton Wilson hit 4 of 5 3-point attempts and 9 of 9 free throws in scoring 23 points for Detroit (9-6, 3-1). Paris Bass added 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Valparaiso led 50-29 at halftime. Detroit rallied within seven with 7:25 left but Peters had a bucket and three free throws and the lead remained in double figures.
