HOUSTON (AP) — An 18-year-old Houston high school football player has been charged with capital murder in the shooting death of a man during a break-in at an apartment complex north of Houston.

Eligah Haywood was a defensive back for the Eisenhower High School Eagles in northwestern Houston. He's accused of breaking in and ransacking the apartment of Adrian Neal with two other men, the kicking open the door to the bathroom in which the 26-year-old man was hiding and fatally shooting him.

Prosecutors say the group then took several electronic devices and Neal's car and left.

Haywood is held in the Harris County Jail without bond. His attorney, Allan Tanner, says he doesn't believe Haywood pulled the trigger.
