CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — Authorities say a 13-year-old boy has become the first homicide victim of the year in Camden, New Jersey.
The Camden County prosecutor's office says Nathaniel Plummer Jr. was found shot on the sidewalk in the city around 11:15 p.m. Thursday.
The Camden teen was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead early Friday.
Nathaniel's mother, Taisha Mercado, tells the Courier-Post of Cherry Hill that he wanted to be a basketball player when he grew up.
She says through tears, "He was just a baby."
An investigation into his death is ongoing.
The city of 77,000 residents across the Delaware River from Philadelphia is among the most impoverished in the nation and has long struggled with crime. Thirty-two people were killed in the city last year.
