SPARKS, Nev. (AP) — Washoe County prosecutors have refiled a first-degree murder charge against a man who was accused of killing a 57-year-old Sparks woman in 2005 but never went to trial. The district attorney's office says 37-year-old Robert J. Ramirez has been taken into custody in connection with the death of Charlotte Szczepkowski.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada's attorney general is filing a new legal move to stop one of three lawsuits pending in a battle over a state law to fund the education of students who move from public to private schools. Attorney General Adam Laxalt says Lieutenant Gov. Mark Hutchison has a legal conflict of interest disqualifying him from the case he filed Dec. 22 as a private lawyer. An aide says Hutchison is traveling and can't immediately comment.
RENO, Nev. (AP) — Ohio Gov. John Kasich is bringing his Republican presidential campaign to northern Nevada for the first time next week. Kasich plans to meet with voters in Reno on Tuesday at the Washoe County Republican headquarters on South Virginia Street. Kasich's visit comes six weeks before Nevada's Republican caucuses Feb. 23.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Testimony has begun in the trial of a former storefront church pastor and international fugitive accused of sexually assaulting girls in his Henderson congregation under the guise of counseling. Otis Holland's defense attorney tells the journey the teenage girls accusing the former United Faith Church congregation leader of abusing them might have concocted stories because they thought they loved Holland. The 59-year-old Holland has pleaded not guilty.
