NEW YORK (AP) — Ken Griffey Jr. seems assured of election to the baseball Hall of Fame on his first try when results of the balloting are announced today. He's expected to get a record vote of close to 100 percent. Mike Piazza, Jeff Bagwell and Tim Raines also are strong candidates to gain the 75 percent needed for baseball's highest honor.

NEW YORK (AP) — NFL executives and members of various owners committees will start to pore over applications from the Chargers, Raiders and Rams to relocate to Los Angeles for the coming season. All owners will meet in Houston next week and are expected to vote on whether to allow any of the teams to move. A team wanting to move needs 24 of 32 votes.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — The Spurs try to keep their home record spotless when they host Utah tonight as part of the NBA schedule. San Antonio is unbeaten in 20 home games, including a 31-point win over the Jazz last month. The Southwest Division-leading Spurs have won five in a row.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) —The Clippers take a six-game winning streak, the longest current one in the NBA, into tonight's game at Portland. Los Angeles has put the streak together without star forward Blake Griffin, who has missed the last five games with a torn left quadriceps.

PERTH, Australia (AP) — Serena Williams has withdrawn from the Hopman Cup because of inflammation in her left knee that forced the world's top-ranked player to retire from her singles match yesterday. The injury is a setback in Williams' preparations for the Australian Open, which begins Jan. 18.
