WEST POINT, N.Y. (AP) — Brigadier Gen. Diana M. Holland has assumed command as the commandant of cadets at the U.S. Military Academy, becoming the first woman to hold the position in West Point's 214-year history.
Holland's new job officially began Tuesday during a ceremony held at West Point's Cullum Hall.
It was a homecoming for Holland, who graduated from the military academy in 1990 and later returned to West Point to teach history. During her previous posting, she served as deputy commanding general for support for the Army's 10th Mountain Division based at Fort Drum in northern New York.
As the academy's 76th commandant of cadets, Holland is she'll oversee discipline and training for the academy's approximately 4,200 cadets.
