WASHINGTON (AP) — Details remain sketchy, but the military says one U.S. service member was killed and two were wounded in southern Afghanistan. It happened near the city of Marja, in Helmand province, which shares a border with Pakistan. The region has seen a Taliban insurgence.
DETROIT (AP) — Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has declared a state of emergency in the city of Flint over problems with lead in its drinking water. State financial managers switched the source to the Flint river in a cost-cutting move in 2014. Children were found to have elevated levels of lead due to the water supply. Exposure to lead can cause behavior problems and learning disabilities in children. A federal investigation has been launched.
NEW YORK (AP) — Steely Dan founder Donald Fagen has been charged with assaulting his wife at their Manhattan home. That's according to law enforcement officials and court papers. The 67-year-old former lead singer allegedly shoved Libby Titus into a marble window frame, knocking her to the floor at their Upper East Side apartment. A complaint says her arm was injured.
PHOENIX (AP) — Blues guitarist Long John Hunter has died. Hunter, who was 84, recorded seven solo albums in a 60-year career and was known internationally for his onstage showmanship. James Brown, Buddy Holly, Etta James and Albert Collins reportedly attended shows by Hunter. He led the house band at the Lobby Club in Juarez, Mexico, from 1957 to 1970.
