SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah man who created a dating website for white people says it is not racially motivated.
Sam Russell says he founded WhereWhitePeopleMeet.com after seeing TV ads for targeted sites like BlackPeopleMeet.com, FarmersOnly.com and LDSSingles.com.
Russell, who lives in Bountiful, launched the website in December and put up a billboard in West Valley City last week. Amid national media exposure, the site's membership has risen from five last Thursday to more than 1,000 on Monday.
Russell says the site is open to anyone regardless of race and will be moderated for racist content.
Salt Lake Community College student Matthew Wong, who serves as an "inclusivity ambassador" for the school, says dating sites for racial and ethnic minorities help people find others with similar backgrounds. He says WhereWhitePeopleMeet.com is unnecessary in a majority-white population.
