BURNS, Ore. (AP) — An Oregon sheriff says two ranchers convicted of setting fire to federal land have turned themselves in. Their case and a simmering dispute about public land use sparked an armed standoff by anti-government activists that started this weekend at a remote federal nature preserve. It's about 300 miles east of Portland. Federal authorities are monitoring the takeover but have made no response.
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Britain's U.N. ambassador is calling for a reduction of tensions between Saudi Arabia and Iran. Ambassador Matthew Rycroft warns that an escalation could derail talks aimed at ending conflicts in Syria and Yemen. Saudi Arabia severed ties with Iran yesterday after protesters attacked two diplomatic facilities. The Saudis executed a prominent opposition Shiite cleric which predominantly Shiite Iran has denounced.
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) — The family of a black motorist shot dead while fleeing a Charleston, South Carolina, officer after a traffic stop is calling for calm. A judge has allowed the ex-officer to make bail. Michael Slager is charged with murder. His trial has been set for late October.
DETROIT (AP) — General Motors says it is investing $500 million in ride-hailing company Lyft. The unprecedented partnership could eventually lead to on-demand, self-driving cars. The companies plan to open a network of hubs where Lyft drivers can rent GM vehicles at discounted rates.
