NORTH LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) — Authorities say a 32-year-old man wanted in the slaying of a woman on a remote Las Vegas-area freeway ramp is jailed in Southern California pending extradition to Nevada to face criminal charges.

North Las Vegas Officer Aaron Patty said Wednesday that Vernon Newson Jr. was taken into custody last week by police in Claremont, California, on warrant charges of murder and being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm.

Records show Newson is in a Los Angeles County jail awaiting transfer in custody to the Las Vegas area.

Patty identified Newson as the boyfriend of the 28-year-old victim, Anchanette Unique McNeil.

Police say McNeil got out of a vehicle late Dec. 13 on the side of an Interstate 15 ramp at Lamb Boulevard before she was shot multiple times.
