UNDATED (AP) — Texas is reeling from a series of severe storms that included tornadoes. At least 11 people died in the Dallas area yesterday. In the Panhandle, a snowstorm is now wreaking havoc on travel. Nearly all of Interstate 40 is closed. Only a small section of the highway within Amarillo remains open. Otherwise, nearly all the 178-mile stretch is shut down.
UNDATED (AP) — The National Weather Service is issuing flash flood warnings for much of Missouri. Gov. Jay Nixon declared a state of emergency because of widespread flooding that's led to at least eight fatalities. Several roadways have been closed, including a section of Interstate 70 outside St. Louis. Nixon says the state's emergency plan has been activated to help localities cope.
CHICAGO (AP) — Family members of two people fatally shot by Chicago police during a domestic disturbance early Saturday say officers must stop killing residents. Janet Cooksey, the mother of 19-year-old Quintonio LeGrier, says the Chicago Police Department has failed her and so many others. Police say the other person shot, 55-year-old Bettie Jones, was killed accidentally.
SAN DIEGO (AP) - Authorities say an Indiana man fell to his death from a San Diego cliff while using a camera or cellphone. The medical examiner's office says 33-year-old Joshua Burwell of Sheridan was visiting Southern California when he slipped and plunged 40 feet onto the rocks from a beach cliff on Christmas Day. His mother says he died taking pictures. He leaves behind a son.
MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) — Witnesses say Boko Haram Islamic extremists have struck the northeast Nigerian city of Maiduguri (my-DOO'-goor-ee) for the first time in months with grenades and suicide bombers. At least 15 people were killed. The attack comes as Nigeria's government says it has contained the Islamic uprising that has killed 20,000 people in six years.
