Death toll rises in severe weather outbreak in central US... Protests over latest fatal police shooting in Chicago

UNDATED (AP) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is warning that the number of victims from a deadly outbreak of storms and tornadoes in the Dallas area could still rise. Abbott made disaster declarations for four counties today following the severe weather that killed at least 11 people in the state. Meanwhile, authorities in south-central Missouri say at least seven people have died due to flooding.

CHICAGO (AP) — About 100 neighbors, community activists and others are gathered outside the Chicago home where a 55-year-old woman and 19-year-old man were fatally shot by police early Saturday. The victims' families and friends say officers must stop killing residents. A friend of Bettie Jones, who was accidentally shot, says officers should use stun guns or other nonlethal methods.

BALDWIN, La. (AP) — Authorities say a south Louisiana sheriff's deputy was shot while responding to a shooting. The state police say one man was arrested after the incident early today in Ashton, a St. Mary Parish community about 35 miles southeast of Lafayette. The deputy's condition is not known.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A 33-year-old man who was believed to have been distracted by an electronic device he was carrying is dead after falling off a cliff above a San Diego beach on Christmas Day. Passersby performed CPR on the victim before authorities arrived but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Lifeguards haven't found the device and aren't sure if it was a cellphone or camera.

BETHEL, Maine (AP) — A Maine 8-year-old battling leukemia is a much happier girl after receiving her Christmas wish to meet New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. The Lewiston Sun Journal reports that Hailey Steward of Bethel received a video invitation from Brady on Christmas Day, inviting her to visit him Saturday at Patriot Place in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
