SHREVEPORT, La. (AP) — LSU Health Shreveport says two researchers have $3.6 million in federal grants to keep studying a virus that is a leading cause of birth defects and a threat to patients with impaired immune systems.
Spokeswoman Meg Willett said in a news release Wednesday that assistant professor Jeremy Kamil and professor Andrew Yurochko have five-year National Institutes of Health grants of about $1.8 million each.
Both study human cytomegalovirus (SY-toh-MEG-uh-loh-VY-rus).
Yoruchko studies how the virus changes white blood cells. Kamil studies how it moves through the human body.
Yurochko says that in addition to causing disease in transplant patients and developing babies, the virus can heighten the risk of various cardiovascular diseases.
