ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — One witness says "The fire exploded like a bomb." More than 100 people were killed in Nigeria Thursday when a gas tanker truck ignited an inferno at a crowded industrial gas plant. People had been lined up to refill their cooking gas cylinders in time for Christmas. By the time firefighters managed to put out the blaze, an Associated Press reporter counted the charred remains of more than 100 people.
ASHLAND, Miss. (AP) —Linden, Tennessee, resident Tony Goodwin says he was able to save some Christmas gifts that had been under his tree before the deadly storm hit. Goodwin says his neighbors weren't so fortunate. Two people in one home were killed. Unseasonably warm weather helped spawn twisters from Arkansas to Michigan Wednesday, killing at least 14 people in three states and damaging or destroying dozens of homes.
UNDATED (AP) — The official sleigh is parked, but Federal Express says its trucks will be rolling on Christmas Day because it wasn't able to make all scheduled deliveries on Christmas Eve. Express officers will be open across the U.S. from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. so customers can pick up the gifts themselves. FedEx blames the delays on weather and a crush of last-minute shopping.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — If you're up early Christmas morning, take a moment to gaze into the sky. There will be a rare full moon on Christmas Day. That hasn't happened since 1977. It will reach its peak at 6:11 a.m. EST. It won't happen again until Christmas 2034.
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Police in San Diego are looking for a woman described as weighing about 400 pounds with a beard in the stabbing of a man who asked for a cigarette. Police tell the San Diego Union-Tribune that the 39-year-old man walked up to a woman and a group of others Wednesday night and asked them for a cigarette in the city's East Village. They say the woman then told the man to get away from her things before stabbing him and running away. The man is expected to survive.
