FORT BRAGG, N.C. (AP) — The U.S. soldier held for five years by the Taliban in Afghanistan appeared before a military judge today, for the first time since the Army decided to try him for desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is accused of walking away from his post in Afghanistan in 2009. The Taliban freed him in May 2014 in a prisoner swap with the U.S. Bergdahl's next court date is set for Jan. 12.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Some of the victims of Sunday's crash on the Las Vegas Strip are recalling the horror that killed one person and injured dozens of others. Oregon wrestling coach Severin Walsh says he was in town with some of his players for a college tournament. They were walking down stairs outside the Planet Hollywood hotel-casino when a car came up over the curb and Walsh "heard the motor gun." He says four wrestlers in his group and 20 other players and coaches were struck. They sustained minor injuries.
GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (AP) — One person is in custody in New York after an attempted robbery at a Long Island mall filled with shoppers led to gunfire today, sending people running and screaming. One mall employee is in serious condition with a gunshot wound. Police say the robber walked over to the Rolex section of the Tourneau watch store at the Roosevelt Field Mall and got into a struggle with store security. The gun went off striking a 67-year-old employee in the shoulder.
NASHUA, N.H. (AP) — Police officials in Nashua, New Hampshire, say they'll talk with school district administrators before deciding whether to keep additional police officers in the public schools. A threat of violence over the weekend prompted officials to shut down all public schools on Monday, but they reopened Tuesday with a greater police presence. Nashua Police Capt. David Bailey the credibility of the threat "has been greatly diminished." There's been a rash of school threats in Los Angeles, New York City, Miami, Houston and Las Vegas.
BUFORD, Ga. (AP) — A suspected bank robber in Georgia has turned himself in to police, a day after demanding cash and wishing the bank teller a merry Christmas in a note. Police say Joshua Henry Harbin heard a news report on the radio on Tuesday about Monday's robbery at BB&T bank in Buford. He admitted to someone that he was the robber and told that person to call police. Harbin is now locked up and he faces one count of robbery.
