UNDATED (AP) — Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey is The Associated Press college football player of the year, edging out Alabama Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry for the honor. McCaffrey was the runner-up for the Heisman Trophy to Henry, but received 29 votes from the AP Top 25 media panel to 16 for the Crimson Tide star.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Free agent pitcher Mike Leake and the St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to an $80 million, five-year contract. A 28-year-old right-hander is 64-52 with a 3.88 ERA in six big league seasons. He was 11-10 in 30 starts with a 3.70 ERA for Cincinnati and San Francisco last season.

DENVER (AP) — Lakers coach Byron Scott says he expects leading scorer Kobe Bryant to play in tonight's game against Denver after sitting out the last game with a sore right shoulder. The 37-year old Bryant didn't play in Oklahoma City on Saturday, two days after dunking for the first time this season against Houston.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Carolina coach Ron Rivera will no longer allow his players to bring baseball bats on the field before games even though he said the Panthers have done nothing wrong. The Panthers coach says instituted the ban he after what he says are untrue reports that some players taunted Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. with physical threats and homophobic slurs before Sunday's game.

UNDATED (AP) — Akron has taken a 7-5 record into its meeting with 6-6 Utah State at the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Tonight, Temple 10-3 record has earned the Owls a match-up with 9-2 Toledo in the Boca Raton Bowl. Jason Candle will be making his head coach debut for the Rockets in place of Matt Campbell who resigned to take the same job at Iowa State.
