PARIS (AP) — French authorities say they thwarted a jihadi attack last week in an area near the central French city of Orleans. The country's interior minister says the planned attack targeted soldiers, police and others, and that two French citizens have been arrested. He says the two were in contact with a French jihadi in Syria.
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. Security Council is trying to ease the worsening humanitarian crisis in Syria. It's unanimously approved a resolution demanding that all of the combatants in Syria -- but especially the government -- allow the delivery of food and medicine to the more-than 13.5 million people who desperately need it.
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A federal judge says Utah can cut off federal funds to the state's Planned Parenthood organization. It's a move the Republican governor ordered after the release of secretly recorded videos by an anti-abortion group. The ruling reverses an earlier decision temporarily ordering the money to keep flowing to the Planned Parenthood Association of Utah. The state can now cut off funds to Planned Parenthood while the organization still pursues its lawsuit against the state.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — For a second time, a court has overturned the conviction of a Roman Catholic church official who was imprisoned over his handling of abuse complaints in Philadelphia. A ruling today granted a new trial to Monsignor William Lynn, who's been on a legal roller coaster since his 2012 trial on child endangerment charges. His lawyers say the trial judge allowed testimony from too many victims who weren't closely related to his case. They also say the law under which he was convicted did not apply to church supervisors.
HEMPSTEAD, Texas (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders says Sandra Bland would not have died in police custody if she had been white. Sanders issued a brief statement after a Texas grand jury declined to indict any of the sheriff's officials or jailers for their treatment of Bland, who was black. The Chicago-area woman died in her Waller County jail cell in what the medical examiner determined was a suicide. Sanders, who was campaigning in Iowa, says the U.S. must reform "a very broken criminal justice system."
