ISLAMABAD (AP) — The American Embassy in Islamabad says it has received information on possible terrorist attacks in the Pakistani capital in late December, especially during the Christmas and New Year holiday period. The embassy says "possible targets include places of worship and shopping centers." It's advising American citizens in Pakistan to limit their trips to crowded places such as markets, restaurants, hotels and places of worship.

ABOARD THE CHARLES DE GAULLE (AP) — Defense Secretary Ash Carter has met with naval commanders on U.S. and French warships in the Persian Gulf — and he's promising there's more to come in the battle against Islamic State militants in Iraq and Syria. Carter visited the French aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, which is expected to begin launching airstrikes against IS from the Gulf soon. He also talked to American troops on the USS Kearsarge (KEER-sarj), an amphibious assault ship that's been supporting coalition missions in Iraq and Syria.

SANAA, Yemen (AP) — Fierce fighting in northern Yemen near the Saudi border has killed more than 75 troops over the past three days. That's according to Yemeni security sources and witnesses. They say the clashes between rebel-allied units and pro-government Yemeni forces have killed more than 40 rebels and 35 government troops and wounded dozens more on both sides.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Authorities say a shoplifting suspect has been fatally shot by a Tennessee sheriff's deputy. A Knoxville police spokesman says deputies from the Knox County Sheriff's Office saw the suspect shoplifting at a West Knoxville sporting goods store and pursued him into the parking lot, where the suspect hit both deputies with his car. One of the deputies opened fire. The suspect crashed into parked vehicles and died at the scene. The deputies were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

LINTHICUM HEIGHTS, Md. (AP) — A man is dead after he allegedly tried to rob an off-duty Baltimore police officer with a toy gun. Police in Maryland's Anne Arundel County say the off-duty Special Operations officer told police that a man approached him, produced a gun and attempted to rob him. The officer shot him with his service weapon. Police say the gun they found at the scene was a realistic-looking toy.
