MIAMI (AP) — Jeff Mathis has agreed to a $1.5 million, one-year contract to remain with the Miami Marlins, where he is expected to back up catcher J.T. Realmuto again.
Mathis made the same salary in 2015, when he was limited to 32 games because he missed nearly two months due to a broken finger.
He batted only .161 in 103 plate appearances and is a .194 career hitter. But the 11-year veteran provides experience behind Realmuto, who hit .259 with 10 homers as a rookie.
Mathis has been with Miami for three years and also played for the Angels and Blue Jays.
He can earn $100,000 in performance bonuses for plate appearances: $20,000 for 300 and each additional 50 through 500.
