CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services is proposing a split of the state's juvenile detention facility in order to establish a residential psychiatric treatment center for youths.
The Concord Monitor reports (http://bit.ly/1Ob7Ign ) New Hampshire DHHS officials will present its proposal to the joint legislative fiscal committee on Friday.
The department estimates the conversion will save the state approximately $3.5 million annually in addition to easing the burden of the overextended New Hampshire Hospital in Concord.
The proposal calls for the splitting of Sununu Youth Services Center into two separate 72-bed facilities, one of which would remain a juvenile correction center.
Each facility would feature its own entrance, living space and education areas. Officials say the cafeteria and recreational area would be shared with no comingling.
