Brazil faces a tough task in keeping its Olympic hoops hopes alive.
Brazil lost 89-69 to Greece this afternoon to finish second in Group A at the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Athens. The setback sets up a Thursday quarterfinal meeting with Group B winner Germany--a team featuring NBA players Dirk Nowitzki and Chris Kaman.
Neither of the players with BYU ties played well today, with Jonathan Tavernari scoreless (0/1 3pfg, 0/2 ft) with two fouls in 16 minutes played, while Rafael Araujo followed up a 16-point performance against Lebanon with a scoreless, one rebound, one turnover effort (in only 3 minutes) against Greece. Not sure whether Rafa's low minutes total was a function of injury or tactics, but either way, he was a non-factor.
