DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — A college student who was struck by lightning last spring and had to struggle to walk again is ready to graduate from the University of Dayton.
After months spent in rehab healing from broken bones and burns, Sean Ferguson returned to campus in August and will be able to walk across the stage at Saturday's commencement with some 650 classmates.
The 23-year-old marketing major from Pittsburgh was walking home in Dayton on April 8 when he was struck by lightning. Several passers-by rushed to help him, and one gave him CPR.
Ferguson has said that he will leave the university touched by all the support he's received both at school and from around the country over the past few months. Hundreds of people reached out to him with messages of prayer and encouragement, he said.
Ferguson said he also is grateful for the many life lessons he has learned at the university in southwest Ohio.
"As members of this community, we are taught to learn, lead and serve to the best of our ability, and I fully intend to carry this mission wherever the road of life takes me," he said.
A job with a staffing agency awaits Ferguson in Pittsburgh after graduation.
