WASHINGTON (AP) — Members of the House Oversight Committee plan to press administration officials today on what safeguards are in place to ensure that would-be extremists are not able to legally enter the United States. Tashfeen Malik came to the U.S. on a K-1 fiance visa in July 2014 and passed multiple background checks and at least two in-person interviews. She and husband Syed Farook carried out this month's attack in San Bernardino, California, killing 14 people.
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Finance ministers from the 15 countries on the U.N. Security Council are meeting today to adopt a resolution aimed at disrupting the Islamic State group's outside revenue, such as ransom payments and selling oil and antiquities. IS already is subject to U.N. sanctions under resolutions dealing with al-Qaida, but the proposed resolution reflects the militant group's split with al-Qaida and the growing threat it poses.
PARIS (AP) — French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has taken down tweets of gruesome photos of murdered American reporter James Foley following pleas from Foley's family. Le Pen was trying to show a distinction between her National Front party and the Islamic State group after a journalist made an analogy between the two. James Foley's mother told French radio today that the tweets "add to the family's pain." Foley was beheaded in 2014.
GENEVA (AP) — The U.S. is leading a diplomatic push to deploy a U.N. mission of experts and launch an investigation of abuses in Burundi. The U.N.'s Human Rights Council will hold a special session today, just days after at least 87 people were killed in attacks on military facilities in Burundi's capital. Burundi has been in turmoil since the April announcement that President Pierre Nkurunziza (nuh-koo-roon-ZEE'-zuh) would seek a third term in office, which he won in a disputed election in July.
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Tennis pro Arina Rodionova has a big day planned Saturday. She has a semifinal match in an Australian Open wildcard qualifier and her wedding. The Russian-born Australian advanced to Saturday's final four of the Australian Open playoffs. The only trouble is, she's also marrying Australian Rules football player Ty Vickery at 4 p.m. that day. Tournament organizers and her opponent, Storm Sanders, have agreed to move the match to Saturday morning from a scheduled afternoon start.
