LOS ANGELES (AP) — It's back to school today for the 640,000 students at the Los Angeles public schools. They were kept away yesterday because of an e-mailed threat of a terror attack -- a threat that the FBI later concluded wasn't credible. Officials in New York City had reached that conclusion earlier after receiving a similar threat, and kept schools open. Police patrols outside Los Angeles schools will be increased today. Officials say yesterday's day-long shutdown cost the district about $29 million in federal funding.
BALTIMORE (AP) — A Baltimore jury is deliberating again, a day after announcing a deadlock in the case of the first police officer to stand trial over the death of Freddie Gray. It's the third day of deliberations in the case of William Porter. He's one of six officers charged in Gray's death. Yesterday afternoon, jurors sent the judge a note saying they were deadlocked. He told them to keep working. Porter is charged with manslaughter, assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct in office.
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are surging higher in early trading, hours ahead of what's widely expected to be a Federal Reserve announcement of the first interest rate hike in nearly a decade. The Dow was more than 150 points higher in the opening minutes. This morning's gains come despite news that industrial output fell for the third straight month in November. It's another sign that American manufacturers are under stress.
SUPERIOR, Ariz. (AP) — An Arizona sheriff says the sole survivor of a medical helicopter crash carrying three crew members was seriously injured and is hospitalized in critical condition. Pinal (pih-NAL') County Sheriff Paul Babeu (BAB'-yoo) says search aircraft spotted the crashed helicopter last night in extremely rugged terrain. The company operating the aircraft says it was carrying a pilot, a paramedic and a nurse. The sheriff says the survivor was able to use a light to signal a search helicopter.
LONDON (AP) — Amazon is warning British customers that their hoverboards may be unsafe. It's the latest in a string of warnings about the popular scooters. Amazon says some of the boards have a plug that is "non-compliant" in the U.K., and that they should be disposed of at a recycling center. The company also says British officials have expressed concerns about the safety of hoverboards' rechargeable lithium batteries. The skateboard-sized, motorized, two-wheeled scooters are increasingly popular, but concerns have been raised about their safety.
