CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Former BYU defensive lineman Shaun Nua rounds out Bronco Mendenhall's inaugural staff at the University of Virginia, after the new Cavaliers' head coach officially announced Nua as the defensive line coach Tuesday.
Nua, who spent the past four seasons as the defensive line coach at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, played two seasons at BYU (2002, 2004) after transferring from Eastern Arizona College. He amassed 54 total tackles with 16 tackles for loss and 10 sacks in 23 games. He was a redshirt in 2003 due to injury.
The 6-foot-5 Nua was an All-Mountain West Conference Second-Team selection as a senior and went on to play four seasons in the NFL, and he made a trip to Super Bowl XL with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The native of Pago Pago, Samoa, spent three seasons on Mendenhall's staff at BYU from 2009-11, when he also coached with current Virginia offensive coordinator Robert Anae, special teams coordinator Kelly Poppinga and secondary coach Nick Howell — all of whom revealed they were going to Virginia a week ago and officially signed alongside former East Carolina coach Ruffin McNeill on Saturday.
Nua helped the Navy defense to the No. 1 national ranking in fumbles recovered and No. 2 in turnover margin in 2015. In his time with the Midshipmen, the team totaled a 35-16 record, made four bowl appearances, recorded four wins over rival Army and captured three Commander-in-Chief's trophies.
