WASHINGTON (AP) — A member of the House intelligence committee says the threat that shut down the Los Angeles school system today is believed to be a hoax. Democrat Adam Schiff of California says a preliminary investigation indicates that the threats received by officials in Los Angeles and New York were designed to disrupt school districts in large cities. New York City officials say they received the same threat as Los Angeles but quickly concluded it was a hoax.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Donald Trump will once again be standing at center stage when nine Republican presidential candidates debate tonight in Las Vegas. The debate will be the first for Republicans since the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, California, that increased concerns about terrorism in the United States. Trump's response to the terror attacks was to call for a total ban on Muslims entering the U.S. The proposal was roundly criticized by his rivals but appears to be resonating with some of his supporters.
BALTIMORE (AP) — Jurors at the Baltimore trial of police officer William Porter say they are deadlocked in their first full day of deliberations. And the judge is telling them to keep at it. Porter is the first officer to go on trial in the arrest and death of Freddie Gray, who was injured in the back of a police wagon. His death spurred protests and the city endured rioting at one point.
BOSTON (AP) — Massachusetts transit investigators looking into a runaway train are recommending that the operator be fired. The train left a suburban Boston station on Thursday morning and rumbled through several stops before transit workers stopped it by cutting power to the rails. No passengers were hurt. Gov. Charlie Baker has said the operator, David Vazquez, appeared to violate several safety procedures.
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Pete Rose is insisting that he is a changed person -- even if he still likes to bet on an occasional baseball game. Rose told reporters in Las Vegas today that he's disappointed in not being allowed back in baseball, but held out hope he could still one day be inducted into the Hall of Fame. Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred yesterday rejected Rose's bid for reinstatement.
