TBILISI, Georgia (AP) — Georgia says that a Russian military helicopter has violated its airspace, but the Russian Defense Ministry has rejected the accusations.
The Georgian Foreign Ministry said the Russian helicopter flying from Georgia's breakaway province of South Ossetia intruded into the nation's airspace Thursday, adding that the incident was a "provocative action" reflecting Russia's disregard for international law.
The ministry said a Russian drone also violated the Georgian airspace in the same area on Wednesday.
In Moscow, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj.-Gen. Igor Konashenkov denied any violation of Georgian airspace.
South Ossetia broke away from Georgia in the early 1990s as the Soviet Union collapsed. Russia effectively gained complete control over it and a second breakaway Georgian region, Abkhazia, after a brief war against Georgia in 2008.
