LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — A former Lincoln teacher has been sentenced to 20 to 30 years in prison for sexually assaulting a student.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports (http://bit.ly/1U7YLts ) that 23-year-old Jackson Hedrick apologized during his sentence hearing Thursday and took responsibility for his actions.

Lancaster County District Judge Lori Maret says Hedrick abused his power and the trust of his victim and the public.

The 23-year-old Hedrick lost his job in March following allegations of an inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old student. He pleaded guilty in October to first-degree sexual assault.

Hedrick won't be eligible for parole for at least 10 years.

Hedrick graduated last year from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a bachelor's degree in education, and was hired to teach social studies at Irving Middle School in August 2014.
