ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos waived third-string quarterback Christian Ponder on Tuesday, clearing room to add a defensive back to their roster.
The Broncos signed Ponder two weeks ago as insurance behind Brock Osweiler and rookie Trevor Siemian with Peyton Manning sidelined by an injured left foot.
Manning had a walking cast and boot removed last week and is set to begin light throwing Wednesday.
The Broncos could use some help in their secondary with safeties T.J. Ward (ankle), David Bruton Jr. (left knee) and Omar Bolden (right hamstring) all hurt.
Bruton said Monday he sprained his MCL and PCL and suffered a bone bruise in the Broncos' 17-3 win at San Diego on Sunday.
Denver (10-2) hosts Oakland (5-7) this weekend.
