LAS VEGAS (AP) — A veteran Las Vegas high school teacher who once won statewide honors has been arrested and accused of having sexual contact with a student.

Kristy Kay Yegge, 38, faces a felony charge of sexual contact with a minor in the incident involving a female student who was 16 or 17 years old, police said Tuesday.

Yegge was arrested last week and released on $5,000 bail.

The district said Yegge has been assigned to stay home while it conducts its own investigation. She is being paid but banned from all schools.

Jail records didn't identify a lawyer for Yegge, and attempts to locate a telephone number to reach her weren't immediately successful.

She was hired by the Clark County School District in 2003 and taught in the Veterans Tribute Career & Technical Academy's emergency medical technician program.

Yegge previously was honored by the Nevada HOSA Future Health Professionals, according to the organization's website.
